Sargent’s original painting of Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau was called “Portrait de Mme” and depicted the subject with a loose shoulder strap causing a scandal. The mother of the subject insisted that Sargent remove the painting, but he refused, later painting over the shoulder strap, making it appear more secure and changed the name to Madame X to try and preserve the sitter’s anonymity.
